LIBERALS BOOK CLUB
by Patty Gabris
We had another wonderful
evening for the second meeting of the Liberals Book Club. Our group of nine
discussed our book, the many tangents the book led us to and we even learned
some sign language; ask us about the sign for Trump.
Born
a Crime provided an insight to living in and the fallout of a
post-apartheid world. While Trevor Noah
was able to present his life with a lighthearted and comic flare, he made clear
the seriousness of racism and the separation of groups.
Our next book for discussion
is Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in
Books by Azar Nafisi on Thursday, September 5*. Join us for social time at 6:30 and the
book discussion will start at 7:00 pm
Every Thursday morning for two
years in the Islamic Republic of Tehran, a bold and inspired teacher named Azar
Nafisi secretly gathered seven of her most committed female students to read
forbidden Western classics. As Islamic morality squads staged arbitrary raids
in Tehran, fundamentalists seized hold of the universities, and a blind censor
stifled artistic expression, the girls in Azar Nafisi's living room risked
removing their veils and immersed themselves in the worlds of Jane Austen, F.
Scott Fitzgerald, Henry James, and Vladimir Nabokov. In this extraordinary
memoir, their stories become intertwined with the ones they are reading.
Reading Lolita in Tehran is a remarkable exploration of resilience in the face
of tyranny and a celebration of the liberating power of literature. (The title
refers to Vladimir Nabokov's novel, Lolita, a story about a middle-aged man who
has a sexual relationship with a 12-year-old pubescent girl. The book Lolita is
used by the author as a metaphor for life in the Islamic Republic of Tehran.)
Please
join us for good company and good conversation in a relaxed atmosphere. Reading
the book is not required.
*Note:
The September meeting has been
moved one week earlier, Thursday, September 5th at 7pm, doors open
at 6:30pm. Expect a watch party for the third Democrat primary debate on
Thursday, September 12th. The Liberals book club normally meets the
second Thursday of odd numbered months.
