LIBERALS BOOK CLUB
By Patty Gabris
The Liberals Book Club
gathered to discuss Reading Lolita in
Iran: A Memoir in Books by Azar Nafisi on September 5th. We
recognized and discussed the similarities between life in the Islamic Republic
of Tehran described in the book and how life in the U.S. could be heading that
way. This resulted in everyone in attendance to become more committed to having
a positive influence on the next elections.
Our next book for discussion is Hillbilly Elegy : A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis by J.D. Vance on Thursday, November 14, 2020.
Hillbilly
Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis—that of
white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our
country that has been slowly disintegrating over forty years, has been reported
on with growing frequency and alarm, but has never before been written about as
searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social,
regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around
your neck.
Please
join us for good company and good conversation in a relaxed atmosphere. Reading
the book is not required. The Liberals book club normally meets the
second Thursday of odd numbered months.
